The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka His Excellency Mr Ranil Wickramasinghe receives Syedna Saifuddin

The Honourable Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Mr Ranil Wickramasinghe invited Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS to Parliament at Sri Jayawardenapura at 10.30 am on 8th of September 2016. As he received Syedna, the Prime Minister apologized for having Syedna travel to Parliament to meet him, rather than having come to call on Syedna himself. The Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs Hon. John Amaratunga was also present.

There was a warmth and friendship between the two leaders that was tangible throughout their meeting. The Prime Minister lauded the Dawoodi Bohra community's centuries' long contribution to the development and progress of Sri Lanka and his personal fondness and respect for the community. He made specific mention of the fact that, despite the 30 year civil war, the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA had still convened 3 gatherings of Ashara Mubaraka in Colombo.

Both the Prime Minister and the Minister for Tourism cordially invited Syedna to conduct Ashara Mubaraka once again in Colombo this coming year, giving their assurance of the highest level of cooperation.

During the meeting, the President also referred to the 30 year civil war in Sri Lanka, and the progress and development that have taken place since it ended. He remarked that Sri Lanka is a beautiful country; there is economic prosperity, roads are being laid and construction is booming. However, he lamented a general tendency towards materialism and forgetting of the truly beautiful things in life. Along with beautification of the country, he expressed his wish that the people maintain their beauty of character.

Syedna deeply appreciated his words and farsighted vision. He stated that these were the teachings of Prophet Mohammed SA. Syedna referred to the narrative of Prophet Mohammed SA returning from a conflict and declaring that, although it had been a tough battle, "we return from the 'minor battle' to the 'major battle'". When asked what he meant by 'the major battle', he replied, "the major battle is the war within us with our souls; to make us better people."

That evening at 4.30 pm, Syedna presided over a community gathering at al-Masjid al-Husainy, Colombo. Following the maghrib & isha salaah he delivered a short sermon in which he expressed his gratitude to the President and the Prime Minister for their warm reception. Syedna reiterated that the Dawoodi Bohra community has always been highly regarded in Sri Lanka. He recited the Quranic verse:

وَلِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ.

And for Allah is respect, and for His Messenger and for those of faith.

He quoted the Prophet'sSA hadith; حب الوطن من الايمان, (love of one's nation is intrinsic to faith) in the light of which he instructed his followers to always remain loyal to their country of abode, and always strive to be good citizens.

Syedna prayed for peace and prosperity in Sri Lanka.
