In keeping with all Muslims the Bohras regard the Quran as the word of Allah as revealed to His Last Messenger, Prophet Mohammed al-Mustafa SA, and their lives revolve around its teachings. It was revealed to him when he had turned forty, in the cave of Hira on Jabal al Noor, a mountain near Makkah Mukarramah, the city of the Kaaba in Arabia. The revelation began with the command to Read– iqra – which was then repeated but by adding, Read in the name of your Lord, your Lord who created.
The da`is have expended great effort, time and resources in ensuring that recitation of the Quran remains at the heart of their followers daily schedules.
Verses of the Quran adorn the community’s buildings both those that are primarily for religious purposes such as masjids or mausoleums and also other buildings such as schools or hospitals. Raudat Tahera, the mausoleum in Mumbai within which the 51st and 52nd da`is are buried is the only edifice in the world in which the entire Quran has been engraved on its walls. The engraving has then been embellished with gold leaf and the bismillahs, (the invocation at the beginning of each surah) are encrusted with gemstones.
Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin initiated a program for Quran memorization that has been embraced with remarkable enthusiasm by followers all over the world; male, female, young and old. It has become so all-encompassing that his successor has expressed the ambition that every single household should have at least one haafiz– someone who has completely memorized the Quran. In his address as Chancellor at the 63rd Convocation of Aligarh University in February 2016 he went further, expressing the wish and intent that every home in the Muslim world should have at least one hafiz.
